Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

ACT is an empirically based psychological Intervention. A lot of research has been done which shows it to be a leading therapy for the treatment of a range of problems: Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, Pain Management, Addictions.....

ACT aims to increase Psychological Flexibility. One key aspect of Psychologocal Flexibility is learning to be present, that is the ability to notice our thoughts, feelings and sensory information in each moment and drop any habitual struggle with our experience. Often we employ strategies to avoid uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and sensations. Some more obvious avoidance strategies would be when we eat or drink too much, or spend more money than we can afford. Less obvious examples might be avoiding social events, or keeping ourselves really busy.  These behaviours can take the direction of our lives away from the things we want most and towards the things we want least. If we can learn to accept our experience in the moment we are then able to make a choice to behave in ways that take us towards the  things that we value most in life.

Based on Relational Frame Theory, ACT illuminates the way that language entangles us all. Through metaphor, Paradox, and Experiential exercises clients learn how to make healthy contact with thoughts, feelings, memories and physical sensations that have been feared and avoided. Clients gain the skills to accept these private events and see them from a different perspective, develop greater clarity about personal values, and commit to needed behaviour change
